The Role
SpaceOne Futures is developing an innovative method to identify the next generation of exceptional social entrepreneurs that traditional Venture Capital overlooks. We believe data can make this possible. We are looking for a creative data scientist to help us design, build, and launch a new data platform to achieve our goal. Your work will be instrumental in starting up a new investment program at SpaceOne Futures. Our aim is to generate research findings that fuel an entirely new model of impact investing.
Reporting into the Entrepreneurship Team, you will be considered a founding member of this team. As part of this team, you’ll help us break down the highly complex problem of sourcing entrepreneurs globally in an equitable manner. You will work closely with multiple team members to design the application, conduct research, and determine the methodology for surfacing insights on thousands of entrepreneurs.
This is a ~5 month contract position with potential opportunity for follow on work.
Key Responsibilities
Breakdown components of specific problems to inform data collection, storage, and measurement to drive strategic decisions.
- Determine how best to collect required data, analyze it, and present insights. Help us understand the limitations of available data and where we have significance in our findings. Advising on possible application scoring systems.
- Build and test application concepts to validate our assumptions via scalable models. Support team in testing using outside tools/platforms.
- Conduct and present both qualitative and quantitative research to support informed decision making on application design decisions
- Act as a thought partner to team members, help to identify and address our blindspots
- Deliver a research paper with findings from the application
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with statistical model design and implementation for questions of causal inference, prediction, and uncertainty
- Proficiency in R, Python, Stata or similar programming language
- Ability to handle ambiguity
- Strategic thinker; Ability to find unique ways to solve problems and develop a plan
- Self-starter, able to work without direct supervision
- Aligned with mission to find, support, and add value to non-traditional entrepreneurs
- Solid grasp of prototyping and design research to test assumptions
- Lightweight technical skills to help with test module creation
- Willing to question long-held assumptions
Requirements
- Minimum of 4 years in a Senior Data Scientist role
- Proficiency in R, Python, Stata or similar programming language
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams
- Experience with highly ambiguious problems
